Academic Program

The Health & Human Performance Program offers a variety of academic courses for students interested in exercise science, health promotion, physical education, recreation, or sport management. Learning outcomes for Health & Human Performance Academic Courses: To prepare highly skilled professionals to assume positions related to teaching, coaching, health and human performance, and research. To prepare students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners. To provide students with an understanding of the different options that exist to obtain a career within the field of Health & Human Performance. To provide students with knowledge, skills, and competencies that enable job attainment and transcend professional practice.

Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences - Recreation Management Emphasis

The program also offers an emphasis area within the DSU Integrated Studies degree program. Students pursuing this degree can earn a BA/BS in Integrated Studies with Recreation Management as an emphasis area. The Recreation Administration track at DSU is one of 28 available tracks under the Multidisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program. A Baccalaureate degree requires that a student choose any two areas of study as well as complete the DSU Integrated Core and General Education Requirements.

Students with this emphasis area:

Acquire a knowledge of the foundation of the recreation profession in history, science and philosophy Secure an understanding of the nature and scope of the relevant park, recreation, tourism or related professions and their associated industries. Demonstrate a mastery of the techniques and processes used by professionals and workers in these industries.To provide students with knowledge, skills, and competencies that enable job attainment and transcend professional practice. Exhibit the ability to design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity Exhibit the ability to design, implement, and evaluate services that facilitate targeted human experiences and that embrace personal and cultural dimensions of diversity Show entry level ability as a manager of recreation program operations and strategic management. Display, through a comprehensive internship of not less than 500 clock hours and no fewer than 15 weeks, the potential to succeed as a professional at supervisory or higher levels in park, recreation, or related organizations. Contribute to the quality of life and economic development of the community and the state. Local citizens and alumni will enjoy educational, economic, cultural, and recreational opportunities provided by DSU that enhance the community's quality of life.
